Telnic Limited, the Registry for .tel, announced that the new TLD had reached 100,000 registrations just 36 hours after general registration had opened.
“The overwhelmingly-positive response from people applying for the .tel shows that this is a service that is right for the time,” said Khashayar Mahdavi, CEO of Telnic Limited. “The ability for individuals and organizations to control how people contact them through one .tel name for life has obviously struck a chord. We’re delighted with the response.”
While many consider .tel to be more of a service than a TLD, as it essentially offers an expanded yellow and white pages service. Despite criticisms, the Registry expects .tel to continue to grow as leading social network MySpace begins to sell .tel to its customers and global communications company BT begins to sell .tel domains in May. The Registry also confirmed that it is currently accepting applications from further resellers from all over the world.
