.tel Reaches 200,000 Registrations

Telnic Limited announced that in the two months since its public launch, the Registry has surpassed the 200,000 registration mark. The Registry previously announced in March that it had reached 100,000 registrations within 36 hours of the public launch. While general registrations continue to grow, the Registry’s biggest growth has come from their reseller partners, including MySpace and European directory providers, who sell .tel services to their own customers.

“This is a truly remarkable milestone considering current economic conditions and with the attention of the world on global events, but proves that a simple but compelling service under the control of the individual has significant potential,” said Khashayar Mahdavi, CEO of Telnic. “As early adopters start using the .tel as their single point of contact, more and more individuals and businesses are seeing that it’s an incredibly useful way to manage the complexity of communications choices in one single place online.”

The .tel extension has been a point of controversy as the names can not be hosted or parked like a traditional domain name. Instead, the names serve as a “yellow pages” type of listing for businesses and individuals, providing various forms of contact for potential customers, friends, or family.
