With all of the new TLDs in the news (.jobs, .travel, .xxx, etc), a Wisconsin company, Asif LLC, has filed with the USPTO (U.S. Patent and Trademark Office) to get a service mark for .secure, likely leading the way to an application to offer .secure domain names. The application specifically states that it will be used for “Domain name registration services”, which lends even more credibility to the idea to the idea of a .secure TLD application.
While the USPTO will not allow trademarks of top level domain names, there have been companies in the past trying to slip the applications through in order to scare away potential competitors. Only time will tell if Asif’s application is approved and if they do indeed apply for .secure.
