Network Solutions Rolls Out New Billing System for Internet Domain Name Registrants

HERNDON, Va., Dec. 16 /PRNewswire/— Network Solutions, Inc. (Nasdaq: NSOL) today announced the completion of one of the world’s largest Internet-based transaction billing systems. The new system provides for the reliability and scalability required to better manage Network Solutions’ rapidly growing worldwide Internet domain name registration services in the .com, .net, .org and .edu top level domains and to support the launch of NSI’s new WorldNIC services.

Based on an Oracle platform, the billing and accounts receivable system (BARS) greatly improves tracking capabilities for billing information including overpayments, partial payments and chargebacks. Six new Windows NT workstations were deployed in Network Solutions’ Processing Section to support BARS. NSI will also use BARS capabilities in future pricing and promotion strategies supporting WorldNIC registration services. WorldNIC Services, available in January 1998, are designed to meet the needs of businesses seeking trusted, reliable and easy-to-use products when establishing and developing their identities on the Internet. Network Solutions is previewing its new WorldNIC Services at the http://www.worldnic.com Web site. “With a current billing system that processes more than 200,000 invoices for domain name services per month, the Network Solutions database is handling one of the highest number of Internet-based transactions in the world,“ said NSI’s David Holtzman, senior vice president, engineering. Network Solutions was able to orchestrate and execute this major software release on time to carefully defined specifications and “hot swap” without inconveniencing any of its 1.5 million active registrants or dropping a single transaction. “BARS will greatly enhance the speed and accuracy with which our customer service representatives handle payment inquiries,” said NSI’s Chuck Gomes, director of customer programs. “We are grossing an average of over 125,000 domain name registrations per month and it’s critical that we have a system that can provide instant payment history for each customer. In addition, BARS offers flexibility and reliability that we can build on for future upgrades and enhancements to the entire domain name registration system.” Founded in 1979, Network Solutions, Inc. (Nasdaq: NSOL), is a publicly traded company that registers Internet domain names ending in .com, .net, .org, and .edu pursuant to a cooperative agreement with the National Science Foundation. Network Solutions also provides Intranet consulting services, focusing on Intranet development and re-engineering, network and system security and Intranet-enabled business solutions.
