New .eco TLD Backed By Al Gore

Former Vice President Al Gore, along with with his philanthropy, the Alliance for Climate Protection, is advocating a new .eco top level domain name to raise environmental awareness around the world.

Dot Eco LLC, founded by Internet entrepreneurs Fred Krueger and Clark Landry, was formed for the sole purpose of securing and promoting the new environmentally friendly TLD. The company is currently an applicant for the new TLD with ICANN, the organization responsible for overseeing Internet domain names.

“We fully support Dot Eco LLC in its efforts to secure the .eco top-level domain through the ICANN application process and look forward to working with Dot Eco LLC to promote .eco,” Gore said, per a Dot Eco press release. “This is a truly exciting opportunity for the environmental movement and for the Internet as a whole.”

According to the release, Dot Eco said the purpose of the new environmental TLD is “for individuals to express their support for environmental causes, for companies to promote their environmental initiatives, and for environmental organizations to maintain their Web sites in a namespace that is more relevant to their core missions.”

Dot Eco claims that a portion of all .eco registration fees will be donated to green initiatives.
