NIC-Mexico Plans to Re-open .Mx

NIC-Mexico announced that they are planning to re-open the .mx ccTLD for registration after 20 years of restrictions because of growing interest to register directly under the .mx TLD. This re-opening will take place in several phases, officially launching in May. Priority will be given to those domain Registrants with .mx domains in the current available classifications.

The .mx extension was originally restricted to Universities and other educational institutions. In 1996, the .edu.mx extension was created for educational institutions and registrations directly under the .mx TLD were closed. In addition to the .edu.mx TLD, NIC-Mexico offered several other extensions to allow users to promote their ideas, business, and culture through the .mx domain, fulfilling the “mission to place the name of Mexico on the Internet.” Other available extensions for .mx include .com.mx, .gob.mx, .edu.mx, .org.mx, and .net.mx.
