ICANN Approves .xxx Application

June 25, 2010 in News

ICANN has now approved a resolution that will allow the ICM Registry’s .xxx application to move forward. This is a big step for the TLD that has faced many hurdles, though even with this approval, the Registry still faces many more hurdles.

According to Board Director Peter Dengate Thrush, several steps remain in the process. The registry must first ensure, in an expedited manner, that their application is current and that no changes have occurred in their qualifications to operate the TLD. Once this is complete, ICANN will start draft negotiations with the registry, taking into account the Governmental Advisory Committee’s advice received to date. Once this draft is complete, a decision will be made as to whether the draft contract is in accordance with the advice or not and if so, it will enter into a Governmental Advisory Committee Consultation. After this consultation, the board will make a final decision on the approval.

According to some in the industry, if ICM Registry must go back to the Governmental Advisory Committee, this could slow down the approval process. The fact that approval must also go through yet another formal vote will slow down the process as well.
