.travel Proposes One and Two Character Domains

May 20, 2009 in News

Tralliance, the operating company of the .travel Registry, has proposed a new plan to allow the registration of one and two character .travel domain names. The names would be available initially through an auction process. The list of auctioned names provided by the Registry would be auctioned off by a 3rd party provider with a reserve price, if the Registry chooses. The Registry states that bidders will be able to place bids through all accredited Registrars for the .travel TLD. Additional auctions for names will occur until the names are either sold or there are no bidders. After the auctions are complete, the remaining single and double letter domain names would then be available for general registration on a first come, first serve basis.

The Registry hopes that the release of the significantly shorter .travel domains will increase awareness among current .travel Registrars and potential .travel Registrants, ultimately increasing the Registries competitive ability against more popular TLDs.

In addition to the auctioned names, Tralliance will have the ability to select 10 of the one and two character names to keep for the Registry for “use in operating the top level domain.”

Tralliance is not the first Registry to propose selling one and two character domain names for its TLD. In February, Neustar proposed to sell one and two character domain names for its .biz TLD. That proposal has been delayed by ICANN.
