House Moves Against Cybersquatting

October 26, 1999 in News

Today the House passed a bill that would protect trademark owners from cybersquatting. However, the bill undermines what the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) calls a freedom to criticize a company’s practices, dubbing it the “Business Criticism Prevention Act.” Criticism of the bill also comes from the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). The organization set up to oversee the domain name registration process had been working for a solution to the cybersquatting problem for several years, and claims the bill undermines their work.
