ICANN Threatens 3 Registrars

January 14, 2011 in News

ICANN has threatened three domain name registrars that they will face termination if they don’t start escrowing whois information within 15 days.
The three registrars that face termination are iWelt AG, Zog Media dba Zog Names, and Centrohost. According to ICANN, the registrars have not been escrowing their data with Iron Mountain. This missed step is extremely important as the registrar holds the information about ownership and contact details of all .com and .net names. According to webhosting.info, iWelt manages approximately 3,500 names and Centrohost about 14,000. This creates a dilemma as when a registrar is terminated, it is extremely hard to know ownership of their managed domains if the information has not been escrowed.
